Health and Physical Education at Mount Waverley Primary School
At Mount Waverley Primary School, our Health and Physical Education (HPE) program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for achieving lifelong physical activity and maintaining their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. We embrace a holistic approach to health, focusing on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and regular physical activity for individuals and groups in our community.
Our program aligns with current trends in the Victorian curriculum by promoting inclusive practices and catering to the diverse needs of all students. We emphasise the development of fundamental movement skills as a foundation for all physical activities. Through various engaging activities, students build their strength, flexibility, endurance, and overall fitness, enhancing both their physical performance and well-being.
Inclusive and Diverse Physical Activities
Our physical education program offers a wide range of activities that cater to different interests and abilities. Students can participate in individual non-competitive activities or join competitive team games. Emphasis is placed on combining motor skills with tactical knowledge to improve individual and team performance. Students progress through various stages of physical development, from basic motor skills to complex movement patterns.
Safety and Leadership in Sports
Safety is a priority in all our physical activities. Students learn to follow rules and procedures, use equipment safely, and participate confidently. They also take on various roles such as umpire, coach, player, and administrator, gaining responsibility and leadership skills within sporting contexts.
Comprehensive Sports Program
Our comprehensive sports program includes a variety of sports, such as
AFL, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Handball, Hockey, Hotshots Tennis, Kickball, Lacrosse, Netball, Rounders, Skipping, Soccer, Softball, Squash, Swimming, T-ball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball. This diverse selection ensures that every student can find activities they enjoy and excel in.
Incorporating Technology and Lifelong Skills
We integrate technology into our physical education curriculum to support and enhance learning. Students use apps and devices to track their fitness progress, analyse their movement patterns, and set personal goals. This modern approach helps students understand the impact of technology on health and encourages them to adopt lifelong healthy habits.
Physical Education Events
Throughout the year, students participate in a range of physical education events that promote teamwork and individual effort. Some of these events include:
Year 6 Interschool Sports
Our Year 6 students engage in Summer and Winter interschool sports during terms 1 and 2. They choose a sport of their interest and compete against other schools in our district every Friday for two hours. These sports provide opportunities to progress through the School Sport Victoria (SSV) pathway, including Division, Regionals, and State levels, allowing students to compete against schools from across Victoria.
Promoting Overall Development
At Mount Waverley Primary School, our HPE program is not just about physical activity; it's about nurturing well-rounded individuals. We focus on mental and emotional health, teaching students the value of resilience, teamwork, and a positive attitude towards challenges. By promoting a balanced approach to health and well-being, we aim to equip our students with the tools they need for a healthy and active life.
Join us in celebrating the dynamic and inclusive world of physical education at Mount Waverley Primary School, where every student can thrive and develop a lifelong love for physical activity.
