Term 2 Week 10

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Congratulations everyone on another successful term. We have continued to see fantastic learning growth across the school. In the Semester One student reports, you will have seen the learning progress of your child. The parent / teacher chats this week were a great opportunity to make a combined home and school plan for your child’s learning next semester.

School Council & Camps - At last Thursday’s School Council meeting, we made the important decision to reduce our camping program. I thank the parents on School Council (who always hold the majority vote) for their insight and support of this decision. It is important to note that this is purely a financial decision based on paying staff time-in-lieu for camps; a cost we are not allowed to pass on to families. School Council are completely in favour of student camps, and it is wonderful that staff are now paid for their time on camps. The following is our revised camping program that will begin in 2027: Year Three – No Camp; Year Four – 2 nights; Year Five – 3 nights & Year Six – 4 nights. Please note, this will be reviewed annually by School Council and may change or revert back to the current model in the future.

School Building Update – So much progress is happening and a lot to report. Importantly, we are well on schedule to meet the August 8th deadline for the refit.

The oval is the biggest challenge, because we are waiting on the grass to grow, which is much slower in winter. We don’t want students back on the oval and it turning into a muddy mess. The professional advice we have received is to stay off the oval, for much of Term Three. However, it was wonderful to see our students using the new running track and long jump pit as part of their PE lessons this week. I do note, when I am in the playground every lunch time, that students are playing together well and finding new things to do in the reduced play areas.

The play area outside the gym foyer is about to begin. This will be totally re-landscaped, with new roll in grass, seating areas, new gardens and pathways to improve movement around the school.

The SLAW (west side of the senior classrooms) is progressing quickly. I went for a tour yesterday and it’s likely we will be back in before the end of July.

The builders have been fantastic to work with and really making sure we get great quality and value for money. We also have potential for a new exciting announcement – I am waiting with bated breath to tell the community… more to come ?

Student Photo Sharing Concern – This discussion came up as an item at school council. In a nutshell, families either give consent for their child’s image to be used on school communications or social media or not. Every so often, a mistake is made and when this happens it is rectified asap. The discussion centred around parents innocently sharing photos of other children (not their own) on social media. This is something we have no control over but want to point out to families to be mindful of doing this - as some children and families want their privacy respected or have a legal or work-related reason to not want their child’s photo shared.

Long Service Leave - I will be on long service leave for the first two weeks of Term Three, I thank Mrs Hunter for stepping into the principal role over that period.

As we are about to enter our mid-year school break, I would like to, once again, thank everyone for a fantastic Term Two. We look forward to your continued engagement in your child’s education and your involvement in school life. We wish everyone a relaxing, enjoyable break and we hope you all enjoy some quality family time with your children.

Finally, we would like to thank our students, staff and school community for working so cohesively to provide the very best learning opportunities for our students in Semester One. The commitment and compassion of our community is our greatest strength, and we are so proud of our students and their achievements thus far in 2026.

SWAT at School Council

Last Thursday 18 June SWAT representatives attended our School Council meeting. They shared with staff and parents SWAT’s purpose, Priority Action Areas identified from AtoSS data analyses, 2026 goals and strategies that both the team and staff can implement to support them in achieving their goals. It was wonderful to have them join the meeting and see how a formal school governing body operates. We look forward to continuing to work with SWAT throughout the year.

Smartwatches

Over the school holidays please remind your child/children about our Mobile Phone Policy MWPS Mobile Phone Policy. Students can wear smartwatches to school, but they must be in ‘school mode’ or locked up in storage in the classroom. If students are found to be communicating with a smartwatch it will be taken off them and kept at the school office for the remainder of the day.

Posting Student Photos Online

We ask that families are mindful when sharing photos of their children with friends and family online and in group chats. Not all families wish to have their child/children’s images posted online. Just something to consider when sharing photos.

Gaming Addiction

In a recent statement, the WHO defined ‘gaming addiction’ as a condition involving addictive behaviours, where someone loses control over their gaming, to the extent that it takes over other parts of their life, with negative consequences.

There is growing evidence that compulsive gaming can light up your brain with dopamine in a similar way to drug addiction. Game developers are getting better at exploiting psychological hooks to keep people playing.

Several signs may indicate that you’re addicted to a behaviour such as:

  • You need to do an activity more often, to get the same effect.
  • You’ve become reliant on an activity to forget your problems or to relax.
  • You’re withdrawing from family and friends.
  • It’s causing you problems with school or work.
  • You’ve been unsuccessful in trying to quit.
  • You feel anxious, angry or depressed.

House Pride @ MWPS

End-Of-Term
House Pride Art Project Reveal

At our final assembly for Term 2, the entire school—along with proud families—came together to celebrate the much-anticipated reveal of the House Pride Art Project.

Excitement filled the hall as students from Barwon, Glenelg, Goulburn and Murray unveiled the murals they had been creating throughout the term. A true whole-school effort, each House masterpiece reflected the collective creativity, voice and spirit of every student and staff member involved.

Glenelg Canvas

Every canvas told a story. Each brushstroke, symbol and colour choice carried meaning—thoughtfully designed to represent what it means to belong, contribute and shine within their House community. From bold, striking imagery to intricate and imaginative details, every piece stood as a unique expression of House identity.

More than just canvases, these were masterpieces—created with pride, collaboration and care. Every student and staff member played a part in bringing them to life, making the final pieces a powerful reflection of unity and shared purpose.

Barwon Canvas

Congratulations to our joint winners, Goulburn and Glenelg! Their murals stood out for their creativity, strong sense of identity and the powerful way they brought their collective ideas to life.

At the same time, we proudly celebrate Barwon and Murray, whose murals were equally impressive, showcasing imagination, teamwork and House pride.

Every House contributed something unique and meaningful — a true reflection of our whole-school spirit. Each mural tells a story, and together they highlight the incredible talent, collaboration and enthusiasm across our school community.

Well done to all students and staff involved — your efforts have brightened our spaces and made us all proud!

Goulburn Canvas

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teachers—Ms Tonkin, Ms Pertile, Ms Orr and Ms Combe—who led this incredible feat. Their passion, guidance and creativity have been a true inspiration to every student, helping bring these remarkable visions to life.

Murray Canvas

It was a joyful and inspiring way to close the term—a celebration of creativity, connection and House pride. As Barwon, Glenelg, Goulburn and Murray shone in their own distinctive colours, they reminded us just how vibrant and united our school community truly is.

A bright, united finish to a wonderful term.

Kids Hope @ MWPS

Thank You Kids Hope

At morning tea on 26th June, the Kids Hope team from Mount Waverley Uniting Church marked a truly special milestone — 15 years of partnership with Mount Waverley Primary School.

The celebration was made even sweeter by Kids Hope Coordinator Kathy Ferguson, who baked a beautiful cake for staff to enjoy. Adding to the occasion, Kathy presented a Certificate of Recognition to Jacinta Evans, acknowledging her support and contribution to this enduring collaboration.

Over the past 15 years, Kids Hope mentors have embodied unwavering commitment — showing up week after week, rain or shine, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children. Their presence has been a steady source of encouragement, connection, and care.

Mount Waverley Primary School extends its heartfelt thanks to Danny, Christina, Kathy, David, Fran, Pam, Shirley, Semisi, Vanessa, and Bernadette. Each of these incredible mentors has brought kindness, joy, and inspiration into the school community.

Together, they have supported and mentored 56 students over the years — a legacy of compassion and dedication that continues to shape young lives.

Here’s to 15 years of impact — and to many more to come!

Music @ MWPS

Where Learning
Finds Its Rhythm...

Senior School

Senior students at MWPS have been exploring the world of digital music creation this term, producing their own short music animations as part of their learning journey.

Using Chrome Music Lab : Song Maker to compose original pieces and Canva to design accompanying visuals.  They created their own songs using a digital music program and added their animations to match the feel of the song, which were finally presented to their peers.

This project encouraged students to take creative risks, experiment with new tools, and refine their ideas through practice and perseverance.

Each animation reflects not only their growing technical skills but also their willingness to stretch themselves, try something new, and celebrate the progress they've made along the way.

Junior School

Last week, during Planning Week, our Year 2 cohort eagerly began exploring the glockenspiels, tapping out their first notes with curiosity and bright enthusiasm.  With mallets in hand and curious minds switched on, they explored pitch, pattern, and melody, discovering how small steps can build into confident musical moments.

What's been most inspiring is their willingness to try, listen, adjust, and try again - the heart of musical growth.  Each session has been filled with little breakthroughs, proud smiles, and the joy of learning something new.

It is wonderful to end the term on a high note.  With Junior School music officially beginning next term, we can't wait to see these young musicians take flight - growing in rhythm, skill, and musical courage as their journey unfolds.

CHEER Toastie Day

Terrific Toasty Tuesday

23 June 2026

The annual CHEER Toastie Day at Mount Waverley Primary School was a wonderful success, thanks to the dedication of our school community.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the PAF volunteers who arrived early to butter bread slices in preparation for toasting, all under the steady guidance of Chris M. - the CHEER Toastie expert.

The production line was a whirlwind of hard work, the team spirit was infectious.  Tina from the Office joined the action, adding even more sparkle to the morning.

A special shout-out to our fabulous work-experience students who became our delivery heroes - ferrying steaming boxes of cheese toasties to classrooms across the school.  On a crisp, chilly day, those warm toasty bundles of goodness brought comfort, smiles, and cheer to every heart.

Thank you to every volunteer, helper, and supporter who made the magic happen.   Till next year, stay toasty!

Crossings @ MWPS

Crossing Legends on Park Lane and Toirram Road

With lollipops lifted at break of day,
they guide little footsteps the safest way.
In bright neon vests and smiles that shine,
they turn busy roads into calm, clear lines.

Cars slow down when their signs appear,
a circle of safety that all can hear.
Through wind and rain and summer heat,
they stand their posts on every street.

They greet each child with a nod so kind,
a steady presence, a peace-of-mind,
Unsung heroes in morning light,
they make each crossing feel just right.

So here's to the legends who guard the way,
protecting the young day by day.
With hearts so steady and spirits bright,
our lollipop heroes make each day a delight.

A Massive Thank-You to Kim and Jennifer!!
