Dear Families,
Recently I attended the Victorian Government School Principals Conference. This annual conference provides principals (including Ms. Evans, Mrs Hunter and I) with the opportunity to hear from a range of speakers on current education trends impacting our schools and the broader community. AI was a hot topic and particularly how quickly it is moving ahead. The Department acknowledged that they have been very cautious in their approach to AI, and that most schools, including our own, are already exploring how we can best use AI to benefit students. This is a rapidly moving area, and schools are now beginning to collaborate on the delivery of AI that is purposeful, accurate, and enhances learning. This will be an area that will inform our practice over the coming years, and there is no doubt that our students will be experimenting as well. Part of our role will be to provide students with the tools they need to ensure they use AI in a safe and productive manner.
In addition, the conference explored the new Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 and it was reassuring to hear that the work done by the school so far is well and truly on the right track. Principals also heard from experts in student wellbeing and how we as a school system can work towards delivering support pathways to students and families in the future.
The Annual Report for 2025
Earlier in the year, we completed the annual general meeting for 2025 as part of the annual reporting process to the school community and the Department of Education. Our 2025 Annual Report is now posted on our school website for anyone who would like to read it. There is a lot to celebrate in our annual report, and the results are once again testament to students, teachers and parents working together to provide wonderful learning experiences and environment for all. The annual report format is set by the Department of Education, and all schools report on the same data sets.
Attitude to School Survey (AToSS)
Each year, students in Years Four to Six take part in the Attitudes to School Survey (AToSS), a survey undertaken by all Victorian Government schools. The survey produces de-identified data that gives us valuable insight into student perceptions at MWPS. It plays a key role in amplifying student voice and agency and informs the school’s strategic planning. The data helps us identify strengths and areas for improvement and also highlights what we’ve done well over the past year. Students in the SWOT also use this data to guide their initiatives across the school. Our Wellbeing Team spearheaded by Jacinta Evans (Assistant Principal) also draw on these insights to shape our student forums and tailor wellbeing learning to suit whole school trends.
Student reports will be available soon and we look forward to parent-teacher conferences to discuss your child’s progress and make a plan together for the next six months.
Kind regards,
Campbell McKay

National Reconciliation Week reminds us that reconciliation is not just a moment in time—it is an ongoing journey. This year’s theme, “All In,” calls on each of us to step forward together with open hearts, respect, and a shared commitment to a better future.
Being “all in” means more than words. It calls us to listen deeply to the voices, stories, and lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It invites us to acknowledge the past with honesty, while working together to build relationships grounded in trust and understanding.
At Mount Waverley Primary School, this spirit of learning and connection was evident throughout the week. Students took part in a range of meaningful classroom activities, exploring First Nations cultures, histories, and perspectives. Through storytelling, art, and discussion, they began to understand the importance of respect, inclusion, and shared responsibility. These small but powerful moments help shape a future generation that values reconciliation not just as a concept, but as a lived experience.
Reconciliation belongs to all of us. Whether it’s educating ourselves, supporting Indigenous communities, or simply having thoughtful conversations, every action—big or small—makes a difference. When we each play our part, we help create a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Together, we can shape a future where reconciliation is not just an aspiration, but a shared reality.

The Global Learning Extension team at MPWS is proud to share the wonderful outcome of our “Fight for Sight” appeal, delivered in partnership with the Waverley Lions Club.
Thanks to the generosity of our school community, this drive has now concluded with a total of 259 pairs of prescription glasses donated.
Throughout Weeks 4–8 of this term, families have come together to support this remarkable cause—donating glasses that will now be given a new purpose. Each pair will help someone in need to read, learn, work, and experience the world more clearly, particularly in communities where access to basic eye care is limited.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all families who have contributed. Your willingness to give—through something as simple as a pair of unused glasses—will have a lasting and life-changing impact on others.
This drive is a powerful reminder that one small act can truly create one big impact. Together, we have helped turn forgotten items into brighter futures for many.
Thank you for supporting this great cause and for continuing to embody the spirit of compassion and community at MPWS.

What a joyful and uplifting way to start lunchtime on Wednesday, 3rd June, at Mount Waverley Primary School! Students and staff were delighted by a vibrant pop-up music performance held under the undercover area near the Prep playground.
Led by Justin from the Online Music Solutions, the performance brought together a wonderful showcase of student talent. A mini orchestra, formed by our senior school students, filled the space with the heartwarming tune of You Are My Sunshine, instantly drawing smiles and setting the tone for a cheerful gathering.

As the music echoed across the playground, a large crowd quickly gathered, forming a sea of swaying, smilling and curious faces. Students couldn’t help but move to the rhythm, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere that celebrated both music and community.
It was a fantastic reminder of the power of music that bring people together, spark joy, and showcase the incredible talents within our school. A huge thank you to Justin and all our performers for turning an ordinary lunchtime into something truly special—we can’t wait for the next one!

On 2 June, 27 students from Mount Waverley Primary School represented our school with pride at the Monash–Waverley Division Cross Country, held at Lewis Road Reserve. With over 40 schools competing, MWPS truly shone—not only through our enthusiasm but by having the third-highest number of participants on the day!
Despite the cold, blustery conditions, our students rose to the challenge with determination, resilience, and outstanding team spirit. Their energy was infectious, and they wore the MWPS colours with pride, demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship from start to finish.
We are especially delighted to celebrate the achievements of three outstanding runners who placed in the top 10 of their events, earning a well-deserved place at the Regional Cross Country on 11th June at Yarra Glen Racecourse. Congratulations to Aurora (3C), Josh (4D), and Ziyan (6A) on this fantastic accomplishment!

Mount Waverley Primary School recently came alive with energy, curiosity, and creativity as both the Year 4 and Year 6 cohorts welcomed two exciting STEM incursions on 26th May and on 3rd June. Each group participated in an action-packed, hour-long session that introduced them to the exciting world of robotics, coding, and engineering through hands-on exploration and friendly competition, as well as exploring a range of robots used in everyday life..png)
At the heart of both sessions was a dynamic showcase of the four levels of robotics progression, giving students a glimpse into how skills can grow from beginner to advanced. Students explored LEGO robotics, an engaging entry point where building and basic programming concepts come to life. They then moved through the globally recognised FIRST LEGO League (FLL) level, before discovering the innovative Helix Inspire program, which uses Nezha robotics kits to deepen coding and design thinking skills. The journey culminated in a look at high-level robotics competitions such as FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)—providing an inspiring vision of what the future can hold for budding engineers.
The highlight of each session was undoubtedly the “Basket Bot” competition—a fast-paced, hands-on challenge that had students fully immersed. Working in small teams, students built their own robots and put them to the test in a thrilling round-robin tournament. Cheers erupted across the room as robots navigated the arena, aiming to score points with precision and teamwork. The activity not only reinforced engineering concepts but also encouraged collaboration, resilience, and creative problem-solving.
Adding an extra layer of innovation, students experienced gameplay using a custom micro:bit game controller. This unique device was designed, coded, and laser-cut by students from AI CUBED, showcasing student-led ingenuity at its finest. The controllers gave participants an authentic feel of real-world engineering design while demonstrating how technology can move from concept to creation.
These incursions provided a powerful snapshot of the possibilities within STEM learning, leaving our Year 4 and 6 cohorts inspired and eager to explore more. With sparks of enthusiasm ignited and imaginations captured, these STEM incursions are helping to build a strong foundation for the next generation of innovators within our school, community, and beyond.

What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of school?
Outside of school I coach two representative basketball teams for Nunawading Spectres Basketball Club. I head coach the 14.1s girls, and am assistant to the Youth League Champion Women’s team as well. I coach 6 days a week and find it to be super rewarding. I love watching all my players grow and learn new skills, as well as seeing my ‘old players’ who choose to continue on with the sport.
If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
I would travel to Rome, Italy, as that’s my favourite place that I’ve ever been. I would also stop over in Germany and Denmark to visit my family friends there.
What was your dream job as a child, and how does it compare to your current role?
At year 6 graduation, they asked us what our dream job was and I said, ‘if I can’t be a professional basketballer, then I would love to be a primary school PE teacher.’ So here I am, living out my dream!
What 3 words to describe yourself?
If I had to use 3 words to describe myself, I would say… honest, sporty and sarcastic.
Who would you most like to be marooned on an island with?
My 4 teacher best-friends: Miss Donnelly, Miss Kersing, Miss B-B and Mr B – our Friday lunch gang. We would have so much fun!
