Term 2 Week 2

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Provisional NAPLAN Data ~ This week we received the provisional NAPLAN results from the 2026 testing. I am thrilled to announce that these results look strong again, particularly in Numeracy. Well done to students, staff and families. Full results will be available close to the end of this term. Please note we don’t have any individual student data as yet.

Building Updates ~ The running track on the oval is nearing completion. The rubber surface is being laid, and the final soft ‘red’ surface will be added next week, weather permitting. The oval itself will remain closed whilst we wait for newly sown grass to come through the new soil - that has been spread to ensure a smoother, flatter surface. The new school entry on Park Lane brings everyone past the school office to improve visibility of who is coming in and out of the school. We thank you for your patience as we develop this area. The upgrades continue in the Year 5 & 6 classes, and it is likely these grades will return to their classrooms near the end of May. Then the classes (in the West side of the B Block) will shift out of their rooms for the refit. Things look amazing and the usability of classes and all the spaces will be fit for 21st Century learning.

Hats off to You! ~ At this time of the year, it is not compulsory for students to wear hats in the school yard. However, we strongly recommend that students continue to wear hats and practise SunSmart measures on days when the UV level is 3 or above, including applying sunscreen and seeking shade where possible. Thank you for your continued support in promoting sun safety at school.

Curriculum Day & King's Birthday ~ Friday, 5th June, is a whole-school curriculum day. This day will be used by staff for assessment and reporting purposes, as well as professional learning. This is the Friday before the King’s Birthday weekend, with Monday, 8th June, as a state-wide public holiday.

Industrial Action - Term 2 looks set to be disrupted by ongoing protected industrial action. The school anticipates that classes are unlikely to be disrupted over the month of May, but there is the chance of further action should the dispute extend into June. It is most likely that report comments will be affected by the action. Nevertheless, we will pack in plenty of learning opportunities for the students of MWPS and some community activities as well, including Education Week later in the term.

Mid-Year Reports - Regardless of industrial action, the state government has been exploring changes to the current reporting system, which MWPS is likely to trial. The new report standards are moving to a more streamlined approach, the style of which is more akin to reports in the 1980’s. This will likely see shorter, sharper comments and a focus on the student progression points. We will update parents with more information as the term unfolds.

Kind regards,

Campbell McKay

Senior Cross Country

Steady Strides

Sustained Strength

Shared Success

On Thursday 23rd April, our Senior students took to the course for the annual Cross Country event - a morning filled with determination, encouragement, and plenty of proud MWPS moments.   From the first whistle, the track came alive with steady strides, and classmates cheering each other through every turn.  It was a day that showcased not only athletic effort but the resilience and camaraderie that define our school community.

Congratulations to all students who qualified for District Cross Country at Jells Park on 14th May.

House pride was on full display, with every stride and lap contributing to a tightly contested tally.  The final standings were:

Well done to all runners who gave their best, those who cheered and supported one another throughout the event.

To our parent volunteers - we are very grateful for your support and partnership.  Thank you for showing up, giving your time, and helping create a day our students will remember.

Mother's Day @ MWPS

Mother's Day Morning Tea 6th May

Mother's Day Stall 7th-8th May

MWPS is celebrating Mother’s Day next Wednesday!

As the day approaches, we take a moment to pause and honour the women who hold our families, our school community, and our hearts together. Mother figures give so much of themselves—through love, patience, guidance, and countless unseen acts of care that quietly shape the lives of children every day.

Their strength inspires courage, their kindness provides comfort, and their presence brings warmth to every corner of our community. While Mother’s Day offers a special opportunity to reflect and give thanks, it is a reminder too that the love and dedication of mothers deserve to be celebrated and cherished every day.

Special Morning Tea in the School Gymnasium

To acknowledge the remarkable carers and nurturers in our school community, we will be hosting a Mother’s Day Morning Tea in their honour. It will be a time to pause, connect, and celebrate the mums, grandmothers, and carers who nurture, encourage, and inspire our students.

Mother's Day Stall

To complement our Mother’s Day Morning Tea, a Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Thursday and Friday, 7–8 May, giving students a lovely opportunity to choose a small, meaningful gift for a special mother or carer in their life.

The stall will offer a thoughtfully selected range of affordable items, allowing students to express their appreciation and celebrate the wonderful women and carers who nurture, support, and inspire them each day.

If you would like your child to participate, please provide them with a small amount of cash and a bag to safely carry their gift home.

School Crossings @ MWPS

Using school crossings
is critical for
student safety
and
community road awareness.

The primary reasons are:-

  • Vulnerability of Children
Young children often lack the developmental skills to accurately judge vehicle speed and distance.  Their small size also makes them less visible to drivers, especially in heavy traffic or near parked cars.
  • Professional Supervision
School crossing supervisors are trained to manage traffic and identify hazardous conditions that children might miss.  They provide an extra layer of safety by physically stopping traffic when necessary.
  • Modelling Safe Behaviour
When parents and carers use designated crossings, they set a vital example for children.  Children learn safe habits by watching adults, which prepares them for when they eventually travel independently.
  • Legal Protection and Visibility
School crossings are legally protected areas where drivers are required by law to stop and wait until the crossing is completely clear.  These zones often feature high-visibility markings, flags, and restricted parking to ensure a clear line of sight for everyone involved.
  • Traffic Management
Using these dedicated points helps organise the "congested chaos" of peak drop-off and pick-up times, making the overall school environment more predictable for drivers and pedestrians alike.

This term, our Junior and Senior Choirs will be bringing spontaneous bursts of song to lunchtimes on the school grounds - opposite the school crossing on Park Lane —expect joyful harmonies to drift across the school as our singers and musicians share their gifts with the community.

Junior Choir performing "Golden" by K-pop Demon Hunters at lunchtime on Tuesday, 28 April

MWPS Families, we’re also opening the stage to our budding instrumentalists. If your child plays an instrument that’s easy to carry (violin, flute, cello, and more) and would love to share a short tune /song at recess or lunchtime, I'd be thrilled to hear from you.
Please contact me at ellen.newbury@education.vic.gov.au

Alternatively, if your child prefers to perform before school (from 8:45am) or after school (up to 3:45pm), kindly let me know.  We simply request that at least one parent is present to support and supervise before and after school performances. This will help to create a safe, positive, and well-supported performance experience for your child.

If your child would like to join the school choir, they are welcome to come to the Music Room.

Junior Choir practice - 1:30pm
Senior Choir practice - 2:00pm

Anecdoche

A conversation where everyone is talking but no one is listening.

The dinner party turned into an anecdoche, with everyone waiting for their turn to share a memory rather than engaging with what was currently being said.

Scurryfunge

To perform a hasty, frantic cleaning of one's house, usually in the few minutes between seeing a visitor arrive and them knocking on the door...panic-cleaning...to hide mess from guests.
