Term 2 Week 9

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Year 5 and Year 6 Camps ~ It has been a wonderful fortnight at Mount Waverley Primary School, and I’d like to begin by extending a heartfelt thank you to the parents and staff who helped make our recent Year 5 and Year 6 camps such a resounding success. These experiences are truly memorable for our students, providing opportunities to build independence, connect with peers and staff in new ways, and challenge themselves beyond the classroom. Camps don’t happen without considerable planning and dedication, and we are sincerely grateful to the many people—staff and families—that made these valuable learning experiences possible.

Staying up to date at MWPS ~ As we head into the second half of the year, I want to take a moment to remind everyone about our communication channels that help keep our community informed and connected:

  • Compass is our primary platform for whole school updates and includes the school calendar, so you can stay across key dates and events.
  • Seesaw provides a window into your child’s year-level learning journey and upcoming activities. This is a great tool to help you engage in your child’s learning at home each week.
  • Our School Website www.mountwaverleyps.vic.edu.au shares our story, values, policies, and important information—including our school newsletters, which can be read in many different languages to support our diverse community.
  • You’ll also find the lighter, joyful moments of school life featured on our Facebook and Instagram pages—just search for ‘Mount Waverley Primary School’ to follow along.

Student Reports ~ A sincere thank you also goes to our incredible teaching team, who have been working diligently to finalise mid-year student reports. This includes hours of writing and collaborative moderation to ensure each report is thorough, fair, and reflective of your child’s progress. Their professionalism and care for every student is deeply appreciated.

Building Update ~ Lastly, I’m pleased to share that we’ve received a tentative start date for our building refurbishment—Term Four, 2025. It’s exciting to see the wheels starting to turn on this much-anticipated project, and we look forward to sharing updates with you as we move closer to construction.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. It’s a privilege to lead such a vibrant and engaged community.

Kind regards,

Campbell McKay
Principal

Wellbeing @ MWPS

The Impact of Punctuality on Wellbeing and Learning

Every Day and Every Minute Counts

At Mount Waverley Primary School, we strive to create an environment where every student feels safe, connected, and ready to learn. However, we are increasingly concerned about the number of students arriving late each morning and those missing significant portions of the school week.

While we understand that occasional lateness is sometimes unavoidable—whether due to illness, family needs, or other unforeseen circumstances—chronic lateness and absenteeism have a profound impact on a child’s wellbeing and academic progress.

Recent research from Attendance Works and other educational organisations shows that missing just 10% of the school year, including arriving late each day, can lead to academic struggles in primary school and, later, disengagement in secondary years. More importantly, it can affect your child’s social confidence, their ability to build friendships, and their sense of belonging at school.

Here’s how regular lateness and absenteeism can impact students:

Disrupted Routines and Emotional Regulation
School provides a predictable and supportive structure. Students who arrive late often miss important morning routines that help them settle into the day, regulate their emotions, and focus on learning. A rushed or stressful morning commute can set a negative tone that lasts well beyond the first lesson.

Social Confidence and Peer Relationships
When students arrive after class has begun, attention is diverted and the flow of learning is interrupted. Over time, students who are frequently late may feel embarrassed or singled out, leading to social discomfort or even exclusion—especially as peer relationships become more important in upper primary years.

Academic Progress and Learning Gaps
Morning sessions often include foundational literacy and numeracy instruction or essential revision tasks. Missing these consistently can create learning gaps that compound over time. Students may struggle to catch up or may become disengaged, which affects their long-term achievement and confidence in learning.

Developing Responsibility and Life Skills
Being on time is more than a school requirement—it’s a life skill. Children who learn to manage their time, prepare the night before, and arrive punctually are building habits that support future independence and success. As parents and carers, we play a crucial role in modelling and reinforcing this behaviour.

As we approach the second half of the year, we ask all families to reflect on the importance of daily attendance and punctuality. If your child is experiencing difficulties that affect their ability to arrive on time or attend regularly, please reach out to your child’s teacher or our wellbeing team. We are here to support you.

Together, let’s ensure that every child starts their day calmly, confidently, and ready to thrive.

“When children miss the beginning, they miss the foundation.
A calm start sets the tone for a successful day—emotionally, socially, and academically.”

VOLUNTARY School Contributions Update

We sincerely appreciate the generous contributions that many of our families have made toward our core curriculum. These contributions directly support the learning experiences we provide for our students.

In addition, voluntary contributions to our First Aid, Library, Building, and Grounds funds significantly enhance the health, wellbeing, and learning environment at our school.

  • Our library staff are curating new collections to foster a love of reading.
  • Our school nurses are ensuring all medical supplies are current and replenished as needed.
  • As we approach our 120th anniversary in 2026, we are planning important upgrades to our buildings and grounds to improve our facilities for generations to come.  We are currently undertaking essential playground repairs (costing $25,000) to ensure child safety and wellbeing for which we welcome your support through Grounds contributions.

Your support in these areas makes a real difference. Please note that donations to the Library and Building funds are tax-deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, we kindly suggest doing so by 30 June 2025, ahead of the end of the financial year and your annual tax return.
(A gentle reminder regarding voluntary school contributions will be sent via Compass shortly.)

Thank you for being part of our school community.

Lunchtime Clubs

Warhammer Club has continued to grow throughout Term 2...

Many students have nearly finished painting their miniatures (with a few still putting on the finishing touches), and they've now started playing using a simplified ruleset.

It’s been fantastic to see them getting stuck into the games—learning how each character works, measuring distances with rulers, and working together to build effective teams. The excitement, teamwork, and creativity on display has been inspiring!

Kids Health Matters

Sleep : An essential element of success for children

Below are some keypoints from The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne Article for easy reading.

  • Sleep is a crucial biological function.
  • The importance of sleep and children's sleep requirements are often underestimated and overlooked.
  • Loss of sleep is hypothesised to play a significant role in restoring and recovering the body systems, learning, memory consolidation and healthy brain development.
  • Sleep deprivation may also reduce the immune system's ability to defend against colds, flu and other illnesses.

Some obvious factors that can impact the sleep quality of our children are:-

  • Changes to bedtime routines
  • Uncomfortable sleep environment
  • Stress about school or friendships
  • Too much screen time (phones/iPads/computers/TV) close to bedtime
  • Consumption of too much sugary snacks and/or drinks
  • Eating meals too close to bedtime can negatively affect children's sleep, potentially causing discomfort, indigestion leading to a delayed sleep onset

The great news is ~ better sleep IS possible!  Here are some tips:-

  • Make sleep a respected priority, establishing a consistent, relaxing bedtime routine.
  • Provide your child with positive attention before bedtime, and talk them through any unresolved conflicts/resistance/worries to help them relax.
  • Remove all forms of technology from the bedroom. Use the bed ONLY for sleep.
  • Ensure that your child's last meal for the day is at least two hours before bedtime.

Also consider rewarding your child for sticking to bedtime routines!
