Wellbeing @ MWPS

Why It Is Important to Work Together for Student Wellbeing

At Mount Waverley Primary School (MWPS), we believe that student wellbeing is the foundation of successful learning. When students feel safe, valued, and supported, they are more engaged in their learning, develop positive relationships, and build the resilience needed to navigate challenges. However, ensuring student wellbeing is not the responsibility of a single person—it is a collaborative effort that involves families, teachers, and school leadership working together.

Understanding Student Behaviour

Student behaviour is a complex matter influenced by a variety of factors, including emotions, past experiences, social dynamics, and developmental stages. Addressing behavioural concerns requires time, patience, and a tailored approach that considers the individual needs of each student. At MWPS, we take a proactive and restorative approach to student wellbeing, focusing on helping students understand the impact of their actions, develop empathy, and repair relationships where needed.

Our Restorative Approach

Rather than focusing solely on punishment, a restorative approach encourages students to take responsibility for their actions and engage in meaningful conversations about how their behaviour affects others. This approach fosters a sense of accountability and helps students develop conflict resolution skills that will serve them well beyond the school environment. Through guided discussions, reflection, and support from teachers and wellbeing staff, students learn to manage their emotions, resolve conflicts constructively, and build positive relationships with their peers.

Supporting Self-Regulation Skills

One of the key areas of student wellbeing is self-regulation—the ability to manage emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in different situations. Many students require explicit teaching and guidance in developing these skills. At MWPS, we integrate self-regulation strategies into our daily routines, including mindfulness activities, structured reflection time, and the use of positive behaviour supports. Families can also reinforce these skills at home by helping children recognise their emotions, set personal goals, and practice calming strategies when faced with challenges.

Working Together for a Positive School Experience

The journey to building strong, resilient, and well-adjusted students takes time and commitment from all of us. By fostering open communication, showing patience, and reinforcing positive strategies both at home and at school, we can create a supportive environment where every student feels empowered to grow and succeed.

If you have any concerns or questions about your child's wellbeing, please reach out to their classroom teacher or the school leadership team. Together, we can continue to nurture a community where every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Warm regards,

Ramya Deepak Kumar
