Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Early Arrival -
I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we move further into the school year, I want to take a moment to highlight the importance of punctuality. Arriving at school before 8:55 am ensures that students are settled and ready to engage in their learning from the very beginning of the day. The first few minutes of each lesson are crucial, as they provide explicit instruction that sets the foundation for the learning ahead. Missing these vital moments can impact a student’s understanding and confidence. Your support in ensuring that children arrive on time is greatly appreciated.

Skilled Feedback
 - Today, our staff engaged in a valuable Curriculum Day, focusing on skilled feedback in the classroom. Feedback plays a critical role in helping students deepen their understanding and refine their skills. As part of our ‘Best Lesson’ instructional model, skilled feedback is especially important during the ‘explore’ phase of lessons, where students investigate and apply new concepts. Through targeted and timely feedback, we empower students to take ownership of their learning and make meaningful progress.

VTLM - Many parents may have heard of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM), which provides a structured approach to high-quality teaching and learning. We are proud to have already made significant progress in implementing key aspects of this model, well ahead of the recent VTLM 2.0 release. The philosophy and research behind our Best Lesson instructional model aligns closely with the VTLM’s evidence-based practices, ensuring that our students receive the best possible educational experience.

NAPLAN - With the nation-wide NAPLAN testing approaching, I want to acknowledge the hard work and preparation of our Year Three and Year Five students. The high-quality, point-of-need teaching that occurs every day in our classrooms has prepared them well, and I am confident they will approach the five tests with determination and focus. We wish them all the very best.

Thanks School Councillors - I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to our outgoing school councillors. Your dedication and contributions have played a significant role in driving improvements across our school. Whether it be through governance, community engagement, or infrastructure projects, your efforts have left a lasting impact, and we thank you for your service.

Year Four Camp - Finally, we also send our best wishes to our Year Four students as they embark on their camp at Mt Evelyn. Camps provide fantastic opportunities for students to develop independence, resilience, and teamwork skills. A huge thank you to the staff and parents who are making this experience possible—it is sure to be a wonderful adventure!

Warm regards,
Campbell McKay

Wellbeing @ MWPS

Dear Families,

We are excited to work with 'The Resilience Project' this year as part of our whole school commitment to the wellbeing of all our students. Throughout this year, I will share snippets of the work we are doing in our classrooms as part of this exciting initiative.

Why are resilience and wellbeing important?
Research shows us that there is a direct link between wellbeing and academics, therefore children who are not emotionally healthy will
have difficulty learning. When we are stressed, the part of our brain
responsible for learning does not function effectively.
● Calm children can focus and retain more information.
● Resilience enables children to take safe risks without fear of
failure.
The statistics indicate that the number of adults struggling with
mental ill health has increased over the years. Statistics also tell us
that mental ill health is affecting young people at alarming rates
and the onset is getting earlier. Prevention is the key to seeing
these figures improve.
