School Overview

Class sizes across the school averaged 24 children, whilst Prep-2 class sizes remained below 22, within Department guidelines.

The school offers programs in many areas, including: Early Years and Middle Years Literacy and Numeracy, Enrichment (Tournament of Minds, Solar Boat, G.A.T.E.W.A.Y.S., Engquest), Learning Technologies, Band, Choir, Inter/Intra School Sport, Swimming, Camps, Year 6 Production, Prep and Year 6 Transition Programs, Before and After School Programs.

Mount Waverley P.S. continues to work with Mount Waverley North P.S., Sussex Heights P.S., Essex Heights P.S. and Mount Waverley Secondary College as part of the Mount Waverley Innovation and Excellence Cluster. The focus remains on a Thinking Orientated Curriculum to improve educational outcomes for all students, enhancing student engagement through building awareness of thinking skills and learning strategies. In recognising the importance of this initiative the school identified a Thinking Orientated Curriculum as its major Learning and Teaching Charter Priority for 2005 – 2007.

The school continues to develop its Information Technology facilities, improving the acquisition of ICT skills and competencies for both students and teachers. Resources have been upgraded with a computer laboratory providing access to weekly sessions for classes from P – 6. The ratio of computers per student now stands at a most pleasing 1:4.

Mount Waverley P.S. values student and staff wellbeing and continually seeks to improve support programs for students, their families and staff. The ‘You Can Do It’ program complements the school’s Assertive Discipline and Values Programs.  A Student Wellbeing Committee regularly reviews programs, protocols and procedures for dealing with student issues and ensures effective dissemination of information to families. Staff, students and their families can also access support from a Guidance Officer, Speech Therapist, Teacher for the Hearing Impaired and a school nurse.

Although growth in student numbers has placed some pressure on facilities, the school continues to be well resourced. It provides programs that are regularly reviewed and improved to ensure high quality support for the learning process. While students regularly achieve high academic outcomes, emphasis is also placed on the development of students who are flexible, resilient and independent learners. The school is committed to continuous improvement and values ongoing support from the community.

Principal's Report

Trevor Saunders

In 2006 the school was successful in gaining entry into ‘Interim Capital Process’ of DE&T’s ‘Building Futures’ initiative. This is an innovative program designed to link school facilities upgrades and redevelopments with improved educational outcomes for students. This will see a complete redevelopment of the existing site, encompassing the staged removal of all existing structures with the exception of the two original 1906 classrooms.

While the process of redevelopment will bring many challenges for our school it is important to remember that this project will see a new, revitalised Mount Waverley Primary School. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a model of innovation ensuring the ongoing success of our school for the next 50-100 years and a wonderful sense of community pride
